Best Ways You Can Help During Kitten Season

Wait...

We see a LOT of abandoned kittens coming into the shelter all year, and even more in the Spring.  If you happen to find a litter that appears to be abandoned by their mother, please wait several hours up to a full day to confirm that she is not coming back.  Sometimes she is out hunting or waiting for you to leave.  It's very likely that she is nearby and will move her kittens to protect them, and they won't be there when you check again.  This waiting period is important because the mortality rate for newborn kittens taken from their mother is very high.

When checking on the kittens, if they are cuddled together and sleeping quietly, look pink, warm, and clean, and have full bellies, then their mother has very likely been back.  If they appear gaunt or have thin stomachs, their mom might be gone and they will need foster care and special food to survive.

If you have any questions regarding what appear to be abandoned kittens, please call the shelter at (909) 931-4185, Option #4, or send an e-mail to our Foster Coordinator.  We can help you become a foster who will keep the kittens until they are old enough to be spayed/neutered and adopted (typically 8 weeks old) or help place abandoned kittens in foster care.

Cayden Found His Forever Family

Come see all the kittens (and other animals) like Cayden that need a good home at the Upland Animal Shelter.  You might find a perfect match or two...

Foster...

Our youngest and most vulnerable kittens need all they help they can get.  They are too small to stay in the shelter and must be fostered in a home environment until they are old enough to be adopted.  To become a foster, send an e-mail to our Foster Coordinator or fill out our Online Foster Application.

Donate...

We always need monetary donations and supplies such as kitty litter, litter pans, and kitten food.  You can make a donation here or shop our Shelter Wish List on Amazon and have your donation sent directly to us at Upland Animal Shelter.

Spay and Neuter Your Animals...

You can be a big part of the solution to pet overpopulation by spaying and neutering your pets. For information about low-cost spay/neuter services, send our Foster Coordinator an e-mail.

Help Community Cats...

You can help improve lives and prevent pet overpopulation by helping us spay and neuter un-owned, community (feral) cats living near your home or business. This service is FREE to Upland residents and businesses.  Get more information here.  Call (909) 931-4185, Option #4, between 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to get started.
