Animal Care Technician

Job Type: Permanent Part-Time Position, 20-28 Hours Per Week

Pay Rate: Starting at $16.50 Hourly Based on Experience

Location: Upland, CA

Reports to:   Shelter Operations Manager

Friends of Upland Animal Shelter, Inc. is dedicated to helping every adoptable animal at the Upland Animal Shelter find a loving home.  Friends focuses on activities that support and promote the health, well-being, and adoption of homeless pets at the Upland Animal Shelter.

We are seeking qualified individuals to fill positions as Animal Care Technicians at our Upland Animal Shelter operation in Upland, CA.

The Animal Care Technician will report to the Lead Animal Care Technician, and will be responsible for animal care and assessment, assisting customers in selecting animals for adoption, coordinating closely with other Animal Care Technicians and Customer Service representatives, and coordinating effectively with the City’s Animal Control Division.

The job will be part time, with work hours to be worked between 6 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. daily.

Successful applicants should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Strong customer service orientation, excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills; ability to prioritize and organize daily work load to ensure the most efficient and humane care for the animals at the shelter;  high level recognition of animal disease and illness;  knowledge of proper animal handling and cleaning techniques to avoid the spread of disease to other animals as well as employees and volunteers; identification of various breeds of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals; principles of animal behavior and care; excellent customer service skills; data input and record keeping; safe work practices; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices necessary in the area of animal services; safe driving principles and practices. 

Successful applications must be able to:

  • Work a flexible schedule that includes weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Receive, handle, process, assess, feed, water, and monitor the disposition of domestic, exotic, and wild animals.
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and equipment in a sanitary manner; perform on-going and preventive maintenance tasks associated with shelter facilities and equipment.
  • Process animals transferred from Animal Services to Friends of Upland Animal Shelter, updating kennel cards, impound records, and related information.
  • Assist Animal Services with impounding, vaccinating, kenneling, and record keeping of stray animal intakes.
  • Observe sick, quarantined, and potentially injured animals.  Notify supervision of animals in need of veterinary care or euthanasia.
  • Work with the Lead Animal Care/Kennel Technician and other professionals to properly assess the health and behavior of animals.
  • Maintain a variety of records including animal health records and records on the neutering, surgery, vaccinations, and other medical procedures.
  • Provide prompt, courteous customer service, greeting the public as they enter the shelter area, and assist customers in selecting pets for adoption.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to volunteers.
  • Provide guidance and oversight of work release resources.
  • Learn the behavior and personalities of all pets to assist customers in selecting pets for adoption.
  • Provide animal introductions to potential adoptive families.
  • Assist with the release and adoption of animals; microchip animals as required.
  • Assist supervision with the ordering and maintenance of supplies needed at the shelter.
  • Serve as cashier; handle customer transactions.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Successful applications must:

  • Have one (1) year of experience working with domestic animals in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or other animal facility is preferred.  Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.
  • Pass background check, physical examination, and drug screening.
  • Maintain a California Class C driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Have a High School Diploma or GED
