Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Job Description

Organization Information:Friends of Upland Animal Shelter (Friends) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that is partnered with the City of Upland to perform shelter operations and adoptions.  Upland Animal Shelter is an open admission animal shelter for stray animals found in Upland.  Friends operates the shelter with a "no kill" philosophy (maintaining a live release rate over 90%), accepts owner surrendered animals on a case-by-case basis and acts as a "rescue" by transferring in animals from other shelters and rescues.  Friends works with a network of community partners, business sponsors, adopters, donors and volunteers with our mission being to find a loving home for every adoptable animal.

Pay Range:  Annual Starting Salary $150,000 + depending on experience (Full-Time Position) plus medical, dental, and vision insurance. Looking for someone interested in a flexible schedule. New veterinarians welcome to apply.  Part-Time Positions available (compensation either hourly or per diem).

Reports to:  Shelter Operations Manager

Job Summary:  To provide outstanding medical care, including but not limited to, routine examinations, vaccinations, emergency triage and stabilization, spay/neuter surgeries, dental cleanings and extractions, other minor surgical procedures as necessary for shelter animals.  Additionally, perform vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, minor surgical procedures and dental cleanings/extractions for publicly owned animals as part of a low-cost community veterinary partner.

Job Purpose, Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.         Ability to perform several spay/neuter surgeries per day.  Ability to perform other surgeries, dental cleaning/extractions as needed.
        Administer and accurately monitor controlled substances.
        Ensure all animals receive appropriate and timely medical care.  Work closely with Animal Control and Vet Tech staff to make sure all animals' medical needs are met.  Prescribe medications as medically necessary.
        Refer shelter animals to specialty or emergency clinics as needed.
        Practice high quality shelter medicine; an emphasis is placed on problem solving.
        Maintain detailed medical records in Chameleon and/or any other medical software.
        Be willing to communicate with fosters, adopters and volunteers when necessary.
        Assess the quality of life of shelter patients and perform medical euthanasia when animal is severely injured/ill with poor prognosis.
        Provide input on behavioral euthanasia decisions and perform behavioral euthanasia on shelter animals when necessary to ensure public safety.
        Participate in community outreach events such as vaccination clinics, microchip clinics and public spay/neuter.
        Provide veterinary services to owned community animals as directed by Shelter Operations Manager and/or Board of Directors.
        Delegates and assigns tasks to Veterinary Technicians as appropriate.
        Be willing to mentor and supervise VT Students and RVT Students participating in internship programs.
        Have a professional, positive and team-oriented attitude.
        Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that includes weekdays, weekends, evenings and holidays.

Requirements:

        A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.
        License or ability to obtain a license to practice in the state of California, including California Veterinary License, California Veterinary Controlled Substance License, DEA License and Accreditation in the State of California.
        Experience:  2 years (preferred) but will consider a new graduate.
        Must pass background check, physical examination, and drug screening.

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to talk or hear, in person and by telephone; sit; use and operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms.  Employees are frequently required to walk, run, stand, squat and kneel. Employees must have the ability to lift, restrain, vaccinate and move animals weighing up to 70 pounds.   

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
